I received several requests to put together a quick tutorial to show how you can easily set up a transactional email service with WordPress. Below is a quick tutorial video and explanation of how to use a transactional email service to ensure consistent email delivery.
The Easiest Way to Set Up Transactional Emails
I highly recommend the WP Mail SMTP plugin. You can find it in the WordPress plugin repository. Install it, enter the API key for your provider, and you're all set. I use SendGrid, so it literally takes 30 seconds per site to get this up and running.
Another great option is WP Offload SES by Delicious Brains. Setting up Amazon SES is super easy with this plugin.
Why a Transactional Email Service is Important for WordPress
When your WordPress website sends emails, chances are they will never reach their destination. Most hosting providers do not provide any sort of mail sending, and for the most part the email clients don't trust mail sent by WordPress websites.
If you want to ensure high deliverability, you want to use one of these services. SendGrid gives you 100 emails a day for free and Amazon SES is mere pennies for most people.
What Types of Emails Does a Transactional Email Service Handle?
A common mistake is to think of these types of emails in the same way you think of marketing emails. They're not. They're TRANSACTIONAL emails. They're triggered purposefully by a person rather than you trying to generate business.
Examples of Transactional Emails
- Password resets
- Account creation
- Receipts for purchases
Examples of Marketing Emails
- Promotional campaign emails
- Email automations or series based on tags or segments
How to Set Up Transactional Emails with Thrive Themes
Many of the people who read my blog and watch my Youtube channel use Thrive Themes. Built right into the Thrive Dashboard is something called the Notification Manager. Click on this, then in the upper right corner choose "Email Delivery Setup". Here you can choose the provider you want, enter the API key, and you'll be good to go with any email triggered by Thrive.
If you have any questions about transactional email services providers and how to get things up and running, I'm happy to assist.
