Circle Email Hub: Is it worth it?

Video Summary

The Email Hub is a paid add-on inside Circle that lets you send marketing emails directly from your Circle community—including broadcasts, automated emails, and post-based digests—without relying on external email platforms.

In this video, I break the topic into two parts:

  1. How the Email Hub actually works, and
  2. Whether it’s worth paying for, depending on your use case.

The Email Hub pricing is based on the number of contacts, which is different from members. All members are contacts, but not all contacts are members. If someone opts out of marketing emails, they stop counting as a contact—but they can still be a community member. This distinction matters because you’re billed on contacts, not members.

Personally, I use the Email Hub only to email free and paid members who already have accounts inside my community. By not importing my full newsletter list, I keep my contact count around ~1,000 and pay $19/month on top of my Circle Business plan. That tradeoff is worth it for me because of how tightly email integrates with posts, spaces, forms, workflows, and DMs.

You can send emails from a custom domain, but right now it requires a support request to set up DNS records. That said, using Circle’s default sending domain (email.circle.so) works surprisingly well, and deliverability has been solid in my testing—especially since these emails go to members who already engage with the community.

Contacts can be added via imports, Zapier, API, or Circle forms. Forms are intentionally simple—good enough for most community use cases—and are designed to reduce friction, not replace a full CRM. Submitting a form creates a contact, not an account. Account creation happens separately (usually via invite links).

When it comes to sending emails, the broadcast builder is clean, fast, and intuitive. You can send to tags or segments, schedule emails, and choose between a text-based editor (my favorite) or a visual builder. The experience is noticeably faster and more pleasant than many traditional email tools.

One standout feature is how email ties directly into the community:

  • You can reference spaces, posts, lessons, and courses with # shortcuts.
  • You can convert any post into a broadcast in seconds.
  • You can automate emails, DMs, access groups, and invites from a single workflow.

This tight integration eliminates the need for complex Zapier setups and external automations—especially for member communication, workshops, and community updates.

In short, the Circle Email Hub isn’t trying to replace enterprise email platforms. It’s designed to make member communication effortless. If that’s your primary need, it’s a strong, well-integrated tool.
